Workshops and Training
Adolescence 101 for Public and School Librarians

Divorce, drugs, anorexia, bullying - no wonder teens are struggling. After completing this crash course on adolescence and teen culture, even the most dubious and cynical librarian will have gained a new understanding about the nearly 40 million teens in America. The objective of this half day presentation and workshop is for participants to devise effective "no hassle" strategies to serve this largely untapped population.

Before strategies can be developed though, librarians must learn what experts are saying about teens, the issues and challenges facing teens, and the findings of resiliency research. Participants are encouraged to bring their own insights, comments, and concerns to this workshop where they will learn the following about teens:

  • What is "normal" teen behavior;
  • Why teens travel in packs;
  • Why teens pierce, dress goth, and do those strange things to their hair;
  • Three surefire strategies for dealing with teens;
  • Why teens need role models and rules;
  • How to talk to teens so they want to follow the rules;
  • The three types of library programs that promote resiliency;
  • The teen problem books that all libraries must own.
