Helping with Books: The Value of Bibliotherapy

Since ancient times, books have been a powerful resource to help people overcome the challenges and problems of life. The term for helping with books is called bibliotherapy.

In this workshop, participants will learn the "how to" and "what not" of bibliotherapy.

They will learn how this technique is being used today to help children, teens, adults, and the elderly cope with developmental issues of life. Librarians will practice the steps of bibliotherapy from identifying suitable topics to selecting books to developing questions that spark discussion.

Each participant will receive an annotated bibliography of suitable bibliotherapy topics such as divorce and stepfamilies, bullying, the aging process, and making choices.

This workshop has been developed for librarians and media specialists who are interested in strengthening readers advisory and book discussion groups by incorporating bibliotherapy techniques.
