The 2002 Red Ribbon Week celebration was held the week of October 23 - 31. The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to bring national attention to the benefits of living a drug-free lifestyle. Drugs include tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs such a marijuana and cocaine.

The genesis of Red Ribbon Week was the death of Enrique Kiki Camarena on February 7, 1985. Camarena was an undercover Drug Enforcement Agent who was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by members of a drug gang in Mexico. Cararena is buried in his hometown of Calexico, California.

At the time of Camarena's death, David Dhillon, a first year teacher at Calexico High School, was coordinator of the school's Just Say No program. At the request of Congressman Duncan Hunter, the high school's Just Say No program was renamed the Camarena Club. From there, the Camarena Club grew to become the nationally recognized Red Ribbon Week.
